Find a friend who plays and ask them to go to the store to try out various guitars that are in your price range for you.

The best thing to do is to go to your local guitar retail store and actually try a couple out. Make sure that the neck of the guitar isn't too big for your hand, and test out the strings to see if they are high-strung (meaning they're strung father away from the neck, requiring you to push on them harder to produce a full sound.) Now because you don't know how to play, it's a good idea to ask the people that work there about what guitars are good for beginner.

You also have to decide if you want an acoustic, electric, or an electric-acoustic. I began with an acoustic myself - they're not as expensive.

A couple good brands for guitarists of all levels are Fender, Ibanez, Martin, and Epiphone. Ovation produces some very nice acoustic and acoustic-electric guitars as well.

I hope that everything works out for you!

Do you know anyone who plays? My boyfriend has been playing for years, so depending if you want to play electric or acoustic, try to find someone who either plays or if there is a good size music store in your area, you can check them out. Most music stores have bulletin boards that can be helpful for information. Make sure that if you ask at the store, talk to someone who actually plays, not someone who only is looking to make a sale. And there is always the yellow pages for music lessons. Good luck

Go with a cheap fender first, then if you like it and get good go with like a squier M-80 then buy better if u get better, depends on what kind of music u want to play. i like the sound of my steel stringed acoustic but i find my electric more fun. the classical acoustics with the nylon strings are good to get your fingers used to playing and they also have a fatter fret board so you can form chords easier. they also have a shorter neck.

when I wanted to start,I picked a cheap kid guitar so I could figure out what to do first..and that way if it broke..it wouldn't be too bad.and I would know not to do that next time.

Just get a cheap one to start off with. You can get one at Target or Wal-Mart for under $100. If you really get into it, then you can look into getting a better one. But, until then, it's just a waste of money.
