Somewhere in the fish's head are a pair of free-standing bones. They are roughly elliptical in appearance, flattened and with a small node protruding on one side just off centre. These were termed the "jewels" of the fish, with the fish coming to be known as jewelfish, which was shortened to jewfish. The American Fisheries Society changed the name in 2001, in order to be less offensive.
However, the name is still offically used in Australia albeit for a different species of fish.
