As soon as you activate the new phone on your account with your old number, the old phone will not respond to it. I recommend you hold on to your old phone until the new one is activated, as your carrier will keep the number associated to your handset until you make the switch.

When you sold your phone, hopefully you removed the sim card out of it. You need to give that old sim card to your provider w/ your new phone, they'll restore the information that you had in your old phone to your new one, and you'll be able to keep the same number. Just don't cancel the plan, otherwise you'll be assigned a new number.

Contact your cell phone provider. They can deactivate your phone in just a few minutes and you can contact them again whenever you're ready to reactivate it. I had to do this when I left my cell at work over the weekend and I was feeling a bit uneasy about this.

depends on the carrier, if you have a sim card (which is usually around the battery and is a little card about 1.5cm x 1cm) then you just take that out and the phone won't be on your service anymore. if you have a carrier that dosn't use a sim card (the only one i know of is Verizion) then you should probably call them
