my son is nearly 6 mnths old now, when he was a new born he loved being on his belly and about 2 1/2 mths ago he did roll from belly to back twice, but has not rolled either way since Now he hates his tummy time i put him on his tummy 1-2 times a day he is alright for about 4/5 minutes then he starts cracking up. I get on the floor with i have put toys in front and around him , i have even put a mirror in front of him. Midwives say he needs more tummy time for his back and leg mussels to develop so he can learn to crawl but he hates it. He would rather sit up or sit in his walker he can sit holding his head up. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and what would you suggest ...........

If he's good for about 5 minutes, I would just try to work as many 5 minute tummy time sessions into your day as possible. Tummy time also counts for those times he's laying on top of you, so do that also if that doesn't upset him.

My daughter is 10 1/2 months and she never liked being on her stomach either. She can sit up fine by herself and was able to hold her head up really well at 2 or 3 months. She also started crawling about a week ago. I think your son will be fine. He just likes to know what is going on around him and he can't see everything if he is on his tummy. If his pediatrician says he is developing like he should for his age, then I would do what I could to get tummy time in; but don't force it on him all the time

don't have him in the walker. instead give him toys that will eventually require him to stand up. not all kids crawl. some just go from nothing at all to walking.

as far as the tummy time, first pick him up where you are supporting him, but put his feet on the floor. then push him down as if you were getting him to do a squat. if he has good resistance then he's probably fine. you could hold him under the arms and do this for a few minutes, a few times a day and it will strengthen up his legs and back as well. my brother was the same way, hated his tummy with a passion, so his pediatrician suggested this to my mom to help strengthen his legs and back after he started sitting up on his own. before that she held him out in front of her, tummy down, feet against her belly, one hand under his chin/neck, one holding his back and doing basically the same thing. in just a few weeks of that last one my brother was "kicking off" with both feet and his back was stronger. i think your son may be too big for that last one, sorry, i kinda got on a roll.

but try the first one and see if he has any resistance. most likely if he is able to sit up his back is fine, and if he can push himself around in a walker, his legs are fine too. but the "baby squat" exercises will keep them up.

My now 2 1/2 yr. old son also hated being on his tummy! As a result, he didn't learn to crawl until 9 months, and then by 10 months he was walking. He turned out fine, but it was frustrating when he would thow fits on his tummy.
Just keep trying... even if he's having a fit he's using his muscles:) Good luck!

I think what you are doing is fine. Some babies just don't like it. Don't worry about what the nurses say your son will learn to crawl and do everything when he is ready. If you keep doing Tummy time everyday that is the main thing. He might not have any desire to crawl yet either and that is fine too. My girlfriends little girl never did crawl she just went straight to walking at one. All babies are different but it sounds to me like you are doing all the right things so don't worry about it too much.

I would recommend just trying to build on to the few minutes a little a at a time mi nute Continue to do toys for him to see. Also my little man is much happier if I lay there and am face to face with him, he will stay content to be on his tummy longer this way. Good Luck!!

You could be describing my 6 month old daughter. She rolled once at 4 months and hasn't rolled since. She also sits fine and loves her exersaucer. My pediatrician wasn't concerned at her 6 month check and didn't recommend that I force her into lots of tummy time that makes her miserable.

My kids always liked their tummy time. But I've also heard that babies who don't get as much tummy time sometimes crawl later or not at all. They just eventually learn to walk.

What does his doctor say?

My son hated being on his tummy, it is good for them, but mine like his excersaucer and bouncy seat, and he crawled just fine.
