Black Mage is not a D&D character class.
Sorcerer or Wizard are your options.
Sorcerers get lots of spells per day but a short spell list.
Wizards can know a lot of spells but don't get to cast as many of them.

There are no black mages in D&D. If you want more information especially designed for beginners, check the website.
I've influded the links to the D&D official site and the set of archives where the character classes are discussed. There are many other sets of articles that will help you. Really though, just read through the PHB to start and get the core classes down.
Welcome to the game, enjoy. The more you play the more you will know like the back of your hand. I've been in for 17 years now and used each edition since the original chainmail rules, you will get it in no time.

The only Black Mages I know of is a book called Black Wizards by Douglas Niles. Necromancers are sometimes called Black Mages. Or, in Dragonlance, there are white, red, and black, divided by the moons that give them there powers.
Best source is your Dungeon Master, since he's running the game.

Yup I hear ya! I'm trying to start playing again after taking a 15 year break hehehe. Yeah I've been busy having kids and stuff like that. But anyway, I don't recall hearing of a black mage ever. You can pick a sorcerer or wizard.
I'm going to go with a Chaotic Good Elf Sorcerer. It sounds OK, and unless anybody says "NO moron, you can't do that!"... then that will be my character. If I find a game LOL.
Happy adventuring!

There is no core 'black mage' class. There might be a created prestige class but to my knowledge there's nothing official.
For all the official information check the 3.5 SRD at
http://www.d20srd.org/
For 'home grown' classes etc try
http://www.community3e.com
If it's your first time playing I would humbly recommend staying with something in a core class. Also because casters are 'squishy' you might start out with a class that has more HP and gets to hit stuff. That way you learn the game and THEN can worry about arcane / divine spell mechanics.
Blessings,.

Black mage isn't a D&D class. If you want to talk to people about D&D then I recommend the Wizards of the Coast forums, where D&D experts hang out and talk about every element of the game.
