It depends on what kind of music you play, Stratocasters have a thinner sound than Les Pauls because of the difference in pickups and construction, I own both of them because I like the difference in sounds. If this is your first electric however I'd recommend the Strat, in my experience playing it improves my finger strength and my dexterity quite a bit, also, Strats are very easy to upgrade (new pickups and the like).

I've played both in a band and found the Les Paul gave a richer sound and was more versatile.

I prefer the Fender, but it all depends on what sound or tone you are looking for. To me the Gibson is a little "bassy" and the Fender has a more "crisp" sound. You really need to try both in a music store. Good luck!

Depends on what you want to play and what you like better. I prefer the Les Paul.

depends on what type of tone your looking for. both have very distinctive tonal sounds. its hard to describe w/o actually hearign for yourself but the LP is a more full bodied sound, deep and lush ( hence the weight of the guitar, very heavy, EG Jimmy Page now has back problems from playing one alll his life) while a strato is a bit thinner and more ethereal. i suggest go to a shop and try both out and see how they fir your style of music. dotn let anyone on this forum, or anyone else tell you one is better then teh other, cripes if ya can afford it buy both, they are BOTH equally great guitars

it all really depends on where you get your les paul....cuz gibson is really pricey....I have a les paul from gibson it cost me 1 thousand dollars. but I have a fender stratocaster too....and that only cost 700. which wasn't that much. and it also depends on where you get your guitars. but over all I would choose the Les Paul....might be very expensive but it plays very beautifully.
