You could definately leave a message and have them call back. If it's a dire emergency, say so. Identify yourself and what the issue is.

If you're calling someone to tell them that their grandmother just passed away or something, tell the manager. I was a manager at an aquatic center. I've had people called at my work for family emergencies, and if the person calling was honest with me and told me what was happening, I would go take the person's spot and send them to the phone, and take over the rest of their shift to let them go home early if they had to.

On the other hand, if it was someone (particularly someone who sounded young) who was just like "hey, is so-and-so there?" I'd say they're working right now, but I can take a message for them and give it to them when they're on break.

If it's important, like a family emergency definelty they will be put on the phone. Good rule of thumb for a place like that the call should involve someone in a hospital, dying, dead or someone called 911. Any other reasons can probably wait till after work.

If they are on break they may be able to talk but usually you have to leave a message cause Managers don't like the employes to stop

If that employee is serving customers when you call arrived, the store manager is likely to advise you accordingly and may offer to take down any messages you may have. It needs to be customer first!

Depends on what you think is important. Life and death, a true emergency yes; anything else can wait. If important, I would call and say, "I need to bet an important message to *****. Would you please ask him to call *******.
