i'm assuming you are just going to sprinkle the baking soda where the carpet odour is and let it sit for a while. you can certainly vacuum it up afterwards and it should be clean and fresh

Actually, if you have a bad odor in your carpet, you can sprinkle dry coffee grounds on it, let it sit for awhile and then vacuum it up. The same holds true with baking soda. It cleans up nicely, but the coffee grounds work better. Just open your can of coffee and sprinkle it on. It is really good at getting out odors, I don't know how or why, but if it works, I use it. Also, you can use diluted vinegar for smells. The smell of vinegar doesn't last long really and it does wonders for getting out smells such as pet urine and smoke smell. I am always cleaning my house with vinegar, baking soda, all the good old remedies. And yes it is true, there are some women who love to clean and I am one of them.

You can also use corn starch. Sprinkle baking soda or corn starch (dry) let sit for as long as possible (at least 1/2 hr) then vacuum up. Works great on carpet and furniture (especially dog smells) and stuffed animals too.

Vacuum....

If you don't already have a cordless Shark vacuum cleaner. This would be the best route to go for all of your vacuuming needs. It is battery operated and will make all of your clean up tasks more easy and actually FUN!
