I've heard about the radio contests, but is there any other way besides that?

Film Festivals are the best way.
I'm a volunteer for several big ones and small ones here in Los Angeles, and I see movies up to a month before they come out in the theater.
Also, if you get on the mailing lists for different studios, they will let you know when a movie premiers.

I signed up through Entertainment magazine and have been invited to a few, but I can never make it, I live too far from L.A. and Hollywood. It is usually last minute notice also.
