Zoso is right! It is a double coil pick up. They call it a humbucker because the single coil pickups were noted for allowing the 60 cycle hum of the electric outlet to be heard through the amp. When you put 2 single coils together the right way, it cancels the 60 cycle hum, hence the name "humbucker"!

A conventional humbucker (or Humbucking pickup) is a type of electric guitar pickup that uses two coils, both generating string signal. Humbuckers have high output since both coils are in series and because the magnetic circuit is low loss. Since the two coils are of reversed polarity and reverse-wound and connected in series, noise and interference is signifcantly reduced via phase cancellation. They get their name because they cancel out a large proportion of the induced hum (they "buck the hum") that would be experienced from single coil pickups.
