We just moved into a house with lavendar plants lining the driveway. Due to the time of year they are dead, but we know they will come back. Do I need to trim just the tops or can I cut them down to the base?

Lucky you!! If it were me I would wait a year and see how healthy they are and how well they do, you'll know for next year and enjoy your lavender.

I live in ne Georgia and our lavender plants do not die during the winter. I also grow lavender plants at the nursery I work for, we trim them about 1/3 from the top, you should start seeing new growth in a month, if not they may not come back. You'll need to water and fertilize them for the spring. Hope they make it back for you.

When I grew lavender, I cut them down to the base in the fall. You should still be able to cut them right down and then when the warm weather comes, you'll see the new growth.

It depends where you live. In Maine we can't cut them to the base. There has to be about 6 inches of flowering stem left on.

I live in NJ and have never cut my lavender back and they are fine. They get bigger every year and are healthy! Some people cut em, I don't and have never had a problem...
