I had a hot bowl of soup which I want to place on my coffee table. As i fear that the heat will damage the surface, I placed a moist piece of cloth on the table and then the hot bowl of soup over it. After I removed the items, to my horror, there was a white hazy ring on it. What could have caused it? Is this what they call a water spot? Was it caused by the heat from the bowl, or something from the cloth, or both? And most important, how do I remove the white ring? Appreciate anyone could help. The favour would be returned.

Try the Magic Eraser from Mr. Clean or a wood darkner for stains and scratches like Old English Wood Oil. Good Luck

It was caused by the moist cloth, anytime you leave anything wet on a wood surface, it will do this. Use some furniture oil. The ring should fade over time.

I think that you will have to sand and re-stain your coffee table to get it back to where it was.
