I use a Walmart brand of laundry detergent and have always wondered if the more expensive ones really work better. Do they clean better or make clothes last longer? I do not know if there have ever been any studies done on this (not that it is a hot topic). But I am curious to know if they work the same or not. Thank you for your input!

When money was really tight I used store brand laundry detergent and fabric softener. I noticed that I had to use almost twice the amount of a store brand than I would if I bought Tide and Downy. So, no it really wasn't a savings. Also, I found that my clothes wouldn't get as clean and they would "pill" easily. In all my years I have discovered that it is more cost effective to use Tide and Downy in the long run. I buy them at a store called Dollar General and I buy the biggest size I can. You can save up to $8.00 or more doing it that way. I don't know too much about Walmart. I try to avoid huge stores like that.

I haven't tried Walmart brand detergent. However, I have bought cheaper bands (Purex) and I've also tried Cheer and All. I have found that the more expensive brands (Cheer is my fave but All is a little cheaper) actual clean my clothes better. The Purex doesn't suds up the same. After you put your clothes and detergent in the washer, let it get started and then open it after a minute and see if it's suds up good. If so... my guess is that the one you are using is sufficient. :)

I think they work the same. Basically clothes manufacturers don't make clothes to last (the longer clothes last, the less money they make) so I don't think a detergent will really help make them last any longer.
I always save my money and buy the cheaper kind and I have never complained.
I just want my clothes clean and smelling good and I have found that I don't need to spend a lot of money to achieve that.

I think they do from experience. I tried tried generics b/c we go through so much laundry but I found that you have to use so much of the generic to get laundry soapy and clean. It is diluted which means it just has water added to create bulk liquid. I now buy Tide CONCENTRATED. It is a very small bottle (I think 60+ loads), easy to pick up, and really works well with just a tad of soap. It lasts us a long time and really cleans the kids clothes without ruining them.

The more expensive laundry detergents do work better. They clean better, help your clothes hold their colour longer and give them more of a vibrant look.

Generic companies will just dull your clothing and could possibly ruin them. I tried using this weird generic brand once and it totally ruined my load of wash. I will never use generic again... it like made all my clothes fade and smelt gross.

honestly i had my share of both and they seem to work the same but i have to say gain make your clothes smell really great for a long time and tide is great for mud and grass stains if you have small children or a tomboy like i have. my clothes look the same after being wash in expensive and generic detergent. but its the dryer that changes the color or the fabric shape or look b/c some clothes shouldn't be dried on high heat or in hot water. dark jeans shouldn't be washed in hot water and should be turned inside out and not dried to long to keep its color. i think its just another way to break you but thats just my opinion.

I'm not sure about helping the clothes last longer, but the expensive ones sure do smell better. It seems the less expensive brands do not smell as clean.

ive used some generic laundry detergents and i could tell they didnt do as good a job. i use now as consistantly as possible, GAIN or Tide and to the whites and light colors i add either BIZ or Oxy clean. makes a difference. good luck to you

I only use Tide, yes it is more expensive, but does the job much better than the watered down cheap crap. You can also try All- (Almighty) it is highly concentrated and you only need a little. My favorite Tide Scent is Lavender and Vanilla, with the matching softner and dryer sheets. Peace Out
