As the older sister of a beautiful girl with Down Syndrome, I find your question extremely offensive. Knowing the many derogatory connotations that have been socially associated with retardation, how would you like to be called "mentally retarded"? There is no difference between a special needs adult or child and a "normal" person and there is therefore no need to single out others who you might wrongly consider "different". You didn't choose to be born who you are, and likewise, those with mental handicaps did not either. I recommend that you take off your own mental blindfolds and once you've significantly changed your outlook, then you might be more ready to provide a loving and empathetic home for a handicapped individual.

First, if youre doing it for money dont bother. It takes a huge amount of care and work. And its very easy to become neglectful if this isn't a passion for you. If you need a job get one. Dont do it unless you really care. If you really have a passion for this then contact the local foster care agencies in your area they will have the list of qualifications you need. Please be sure that this is something you really care about. We don't need more foster care horror stories.
