I was so surprised by the ending to The Ivy Tree by Mary Stewart, that I immediately started re-reading it to see how I'd gotten so off-track. The author did a masterly job of setting things up so it could be interpreted two ways and steering you towards one solution.

Best Movie With A Surprise Ending: "The Ususal Suspects"

Best Book With A Surprise Ending: "Dance Of Death" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. First runner-up is "The Two Towers" by J.R.R. Tolkien which is not where the movie ended.

The Illusionist. It's the best movie I've seen in a while, and I had no idea the ending was coming.
And it wasn't just a "bam- here's the surprise ending!" kinda thing. It was an "oooohhh, now I get it, ha ha!" ending.

The other 'magic movie 2006,' The Prestige, also had a fairly good surprise ending, but I'd figured it out before they explained it...

Movie: _Unbreakable_ starring Bruce Willis.

Book: _Job: A Comedy of Justice_ by Robert Heinlein

Ahnikiwa, that movie was _Primal Fear_. The title didn't fit the story well. That's probably why you couldn't remember it.
