The term is a charlie horse, and man are those things horrible. I get them when i eat excessive amounts of meat over the course of the week (like meat for 2 meals of meat every day). The best thing to do as soon as you get them is to stand up and run, run anywhere you can but just run and dont stop. after a minute or so, try to use a muscle (like if its in your leg, try to move your big toe over the toe next to it), and if it comes back, keep running. Once it feels gone, but you havent tried to use a muscle yet, just dont use any muscle in that area or limb for a while, then slowly start to use the muscles again. Its a pain to do all that but if you dont it can get really bad and excrutiatingly, tear-provokingly painful and last for a good amount of time.

Edit: What do you do to provoke a spasm in your neck? I think you should probably see a doctor if THATS where your spasms are. He/She will be able to give better advice than most of us.

Different things work for different people (probably not what you want to hear!!).

Try using ice on the area - only for 10 minutes at a time. You can reapply again when the area feels back to a normal temperature. If you leave it on for too long, the area will actually get worse - you have been warned!

Or you can use heat. Again, only put on for 15-20 minutes at a time.

If in doubt, always try ice first.

Try some gentle stretches to the area, but go easy. There should not be any increased pain when you stretch the area.

Try massaging it too (or even better, get someone else to do it for you). But again, go gently!!

Try some over the counter medications. Something like Advil (an anti-inflammatory containing ibuprofen rather than a pain reliever) should also help (but make sure with the pharmacist that you can take it with other medications you may be taking if in doubt).

Good luck!

Quinine water seems to help prevent muscle spasms. When having a spasm, the best thing to do is to try to stretch the muscle. It is trying to contract. You want to try to straighten it out until it goes away.
