I see tons of houses for under 50k & "fixer-uppers" and nice looking houses too. bad economy, crime, what is it ?

Are you just looking at the adds, I'll bet you are. If you saw those units in person youwould immediately understand. Reading has had a declining ecconomy since I can remember, and that is a long time. Nobody is moving there, everyone is moving out.

There are a lot of places to live, but sad to say, no place to work.

I think that once you actually see the neighborhoods that these houses are in you'll figure it out pretty quick. Reading is a high crime area. The crime rate per capita is very high. Lots of drugs and guns. There are, of course, nice neighborhoods in the Reading area as well. But Reading is known for it's high crime rate particularly in the urban hispanic neighborhoods.

I live near there. About 5-8 years ago there was a huge influx of Latino gangs, more than the cops then could handle, and now there is more than the town's economy can handle. All the good people are leaving

It is advisable for you and visit the vicinity and check on the neighbourhood before you decide on your purchase. Crimes could be one reason. However, I like to believe that these houses could be forced-sale. It's very common now a days to see owners unable to repay their loans thus the unfortunate.

Reading's unemployment rate is close to the national average so it must be the latino gang bangers.

I haven't been there in years. Reading used to be a nice place to live. It's a shame.

Because it is probably very difficult to sell a house in Reading PA. It is also hard to sell a house in Reading KS. Nobody really wants to move there.

The answer is always "Supply and Demand". If the price is really cheap, then the area is very bad.

Because the town is in the crapper, that's why!

There are no jobs and Reading looks worse than it did in the depression.
