The human body is designed to sleep at night, so night shift workers have to deal with sleep deprivation and fatigue, more than day workers. We all have an internal 24 hour daily clock, which is strongly affected by natural cycles of light and dark. Your body acts differently when it thinks its dark and releases a "sleep" hormone, melatonin, which increases your desire for sleep and your level of alertness.
So if you work at night, you're fighting your "body clock" by trying to stay alert when your body is programmed to sleep. Then when you do try to sleep, it's day light, and your body is programmed to be awake and active.
Good luck!

I have worked 3rd shift (nights) for many years... I didn't get unusually tired because I made sure I got enough sleep (7-8 hours per day if possible). Most people who work nights think they can continue their daily lives, and simply don't get enough sleep during the day. If you're going to work nights, put up dark curtains and get enough sleep and you should be fine. Of course, if your internal body clock is truly opposed to it, you might not be able to do it, in spite of enough sleep.

Because working nights messes with your circadian rhythms (your body's internal "clock".) Most of us are wired to sleep when it's dark and to be awake when it's light. Blame evolution....I blame it for many things. :)
