What you have, is a copper-nickel Mexico 500 pesos coin that uses the old pesos unit before 1993. The coin is obsolete and not at par with the current Mexican money. In 1993, Mexico issued "Nuevo pesos"(new pesos) in order to stem inflation, and the last two zeros were removed from the value. 500 old pesos was exchangeable to 5 new peso then.
Your $500 coin dated 1988 is valued at $0.50 in nice circulated to $2 in mint condition. It has a mintage of 230,000,000 and depicts Francisco Indalecio Madero on the reverse. He was a politician, writer and revolutionary who served as President of Mexico from 1911 to 1913.

The 1988 500 Peso coin is KM# 529 and does have a value of between .50-$2.50 or so in mint state. With a mintage of 230,000,000 it is not rare or scarce, Book value is one thing and selling a coin is another. A lot of world coins sell for 40 to 50 percent discount off the book price and a dealer will get another 40% off that. Since it has been devalued by the Mexican government, you can't even spend it in Mexico. It is a start to a Mexican coin collection, or how about trying to get one coin from every country. Coin collecting is fun and does not have to be expensive. Hope I helped.
