I just wiped my harddrive, created a new partition and am halfway through installing windows xp on it, however I need to shut down. The initial setup thing is done and its now asking me to select languages etc.

Is it safe to shut down my pc at this stage and restart it later and install xp again?

yes that is safe, though you will proberly have to reformat it and start again.

No. Shutting down in the middle of a reinstall could damage the sectors on your hard drive. You need to finish the install untill you see the desktop...
