the difference between dark matter and dark energy?

Dark matter is speculated to account for the fact that there seems to be more mass in the universe than there should be. Thus, they think there must be some form of invisable mass. Though its composition is totally speculative.

Dark energy is thought to be a sort of reverse-engery, or reverse-gravity. Possibly accounting for the observed expansion of the universe. Nothing else is known about this alleged 'substance' except that if it exists it would probably be very thin (not dense) and only seems to affect things gravitationally.

Though I'm not "up" on many current concepts, my understanding is this....
Dark matter is a substance that is not visible in the ElectroMagnetic Spectrum but has gravitational effects on what we can "see" in the EMS. The composition of dark matter is much debated.
Dark energy (which may make up the majority of the known universe) is the resulting conversion of dark matter into energy. It may be linked to E=mc2. However, like dark matter, dark energy is only noticable when it affects those things we can see.

dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy that permeates all of space and has strong negative pressure.[1] According to the Theory of Relativity, the effect of such a negative pressure is qualitatively similar to a force acting in opposition to gravity at large scales. Invoking such an effect is currently the most popular method for explaining recent observations that the universe appears to be expanding at an accelerating rate, as well as accounting for a significant portion of the missing mass in the universe.


so basically the difference between them are the same as the differences between regular matter and energy, they are just known as "dark" because we can't detect them and we know nothing about them

Dark matter helps to compensate for the orbit and structure of galaxies to help fit theory, and dark energy is the power accelerating the expansion of the universe.

You can argue there is no difference considering energy and matter are interchangeable.
