There is an aquarium on the Outer banks. We visited it a few years ago and it was a nice day trip. Can't remeber the name but a web search may help you. Good Luck and enjoy your trip!

Hatteras is nice and a walking tour of Ocracoke is fine for adults, but with twin 4 year olds you need something else to do! When my children were younger we stayed pretty much near the water all the time and only went out to eat or to the sights in the afternoon. Our one tip to Ocracoke is referred to as the Vacation to Hell! Too much sun and huge biting flies made it a nightmare. The one bright spot on that trip was the hike up Jockey's Ridge where the Wright brothers made their historic flights. The sand dune is excellent for hang gliding and even if you don't glide it is fun to watch others brave the kite! Try visiting the local libraries while there in the summers. They are a great break from the heat and sun and many offer programs for the younger crowds and this allows the adults to get a quiet time! You can also plan your trips around local festivals and fairs. Have fun!
