Question about foreign rock bands?

Has anyone ever noticed that the greatest, most iconic bands of all time are from foreign countries? The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Zeppelin, The Police, Sabbath, AC/DC, U2, etc. Who are the best American bands, and can they really hold a candle to these guys?

Kiss, Lynrd Synrd, Chicago, Van Halen, Bob Segar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Creedence Clearwater Rivival, Three Dog Night, Free, Steve Miller Band, America, Jimi Hendrix, Blackfoot, Foghat, Boston, those are a few from America.

Everyone here in America loves and looks up to the foreign bands, especially the English bands. But in England, they wanted to be like the Americans. The Beatles were inspired by Chuck Berry, Elvis, and many other great musicians. I'd say that the best American band would have to be the Crickets. I can't think of anymore bands, but I can think of groups and soloists. People like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Everly Brothers, and a lot of Motown musicians.

R.E.M., Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Both rock. When music was crappy in the late 70's with disco, when it sucked in the 80's with madonna and other dance crap, who was it that rocked??? Tom Petty man, he was always there as he is today.
REM also was kickass in the 80's and early 90's. In the late 90's, they kinda tailed off, but you can't find too many records made in the 80's or 90's that were better than REM's first 5 releases. Go put on Life's Rich Pageant today, and you'll hear what Pearl Jam and the Seattle sounders were trying to emulate.
Aerosmith was great, until they went into rehab and did crap like "love in an elevator" and boring songs for movies.
