haitian zombies, yes.
george romero zombies, dear god i hope not!
mind you, this does not prevent me from being obsessed with them! i highly recommend "the undead and philosophy" and any of the "all flesh must be eaten" short fiction collections ("the book of all flesh", " book of more flesh", "book of final flesh"). also, any books by brian keene. he puts an interesting spin on the mythology of the shambling, brain-munching type zombie.

Rent the movie, "The Serpent and the Rainbow".
ANd then avoid Port Au Prince, Haiti at all costs.
Seriously....research what zombies are.....and aren't. Look into voodoo, hoodoo, and vodun. Read more about Afro-Caribbean beliefs, myths and customs. Education is your best defense.
By the way, Zombies have been beneficial. They had a HUGE hit in the 60's with "Time of the Season".

There is a voodoo ritual that turns people into a kind of zombie. It involves a sort of elixer and rituals. They bury the person and then dig him up the next night. He's a sort of mind slave he does whatever his owner wants, no questions asked. But he's still technically alive. This ritual is the origin of our zombie myhts. The undead corpse that eats brains is not possible.

From what I've heard about this, it's not like the movies. People are drugged so they are in a deep coma & buried as if they were dead. When they dig them up, they have brain damage, either from the drug or oxygen depravation. They were never really dead & they don't eat people, etc.

when people get cryogenically frozen, they plan to be reanimated in the future. so they die and come back to life. when people die the nerves still transmit signals. they could sit up, move their hand, or blink. that is where it comes from other than Haiti. just have salt handy at all times.

There is a certain type of drug that can make someone into a 'zombie'. But the kind of zombie like dead-brought-back-to-life kind, or the lurching-green-graveyard-people kind, no, that is not possible.
