The top 8 teams from the East and West Conferences. The top 3 teams in each conference division are ranked, then the 4th through 8th spots are decided in terms of points.

The top eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs based on points, where they get two points for wins (whether in regulation, overtime or shootout), one point for a loss in overtime or shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation time. The top three seeds in each conference go to the division leaders, so a division leader could be seeded ahead of a team with more points (it will probably happen this year). If teams are tied in points, the first tiebreaker is which team has more wins. If they have the same number of wins, the second tiebreaker is which team earned more points in the season series between the two. In the event that they are tied in this as well, the final tiebreaker is the difference between their goals scored and their goals against.

Well the most basic thing is to finish in the top 8 in your conference in points. The division winners automatically get the top 3 seeds as well so that's why sometimes you see a 4 or even a 5 seed with more points than the 3 seed.

I believe if there's a tie for 8th, they go by head-to-head record in the first tiebreaker, then I believe it's the team with more wins that gets it.

top 8 teams in each conference pointwise make the playoffs. Division leaders are seeded 1-3, which is why detroit is seeded 4th, but has more points than 3 seeded vancouver.

Top 8 teams make it. As to clinching they go by if 9-16 win all their remaining games(2 points per remaining game) and still can't catch up to you in the points you have Clinched. You can't finish below 8th and can't be knocked out.
Top 3 seeds are the division winners, ranked by points
4-8 are ranked only on points.
