These comparisons are based on me living in Detroit, vs my x-girlfriend who lived in Trenton Michigan. I am black she is white, just cultural information. I was never taught this, but it is an "air" that you notice. If i saw whites in my neighborhood and they did not live their, run the other way, FAST. She had the same ideals, if you saw a black guy in her neighborhood and he didn't live their call the police. I knew (and has been proven many times over) if i go into any white neighborhood i'd go to jail. She felt if she went into the city she'd be mugged and raped, neither of those happened to her, yet she had eyes on her all the time watching her every step. Alot of other issues, but Detroit is very segregated, by race. And my question is why can't each race view the other's point of view. I tire of racism, i feel the sting of it almost every day of my life. And i'm not looking for it. Why can't YOU (the people reading this) understand the person you sterotype?

Unfortunately, I think it's just easier for some people to stereotype rather than getting to know people on an individual level.

I would relate to your girlfriend more though because when I was little I grew up in mostly white neighborhoods. Because of being the only black person and the fact that my mom never taught me to see races, it was easy for me to just be friends with and relate to whites. I did eventually move to a more diverse city but it's always been hard for me to relate to other blacks and I'm always labeled as acting white. It would be easy for me to listen to stereotypes (I'll admit that I do feel uneasy around black guys especially if they're staring at me weird, but then again that applies to guys of other races too...), but I'm black and I'm nothing like those stereotypes and I hate being judged so I don't see the point in doing it to others. It would just be great if more people grew up in an environment where they're given the chance at a young age to understand other races....

I've always grown up in a racially diverse area, and got to know lots of different people and cultures. And I discovered that people, despite superficial differences in appearance were just people. People with the same fears, dreams, hopes for the future. In order to understand this, however, people need to be exposed to other people and other races.

It's a lost cause for some unfortunately. Funny thing is, I've never really noticed that in Detroit...although I only go there for gambling, hockey/baseball/football, and concerts. But I've never felt like that in Detroit and I've gotten lost in some of the worst neighborhoods (with my blonde, airheaded friend) and been up there for various events with my black boyfriend. We live in Toledo and honestly, maybe I just don't pay attention or just too careless, but I really don't get crap from anyone.

Because it would take them more time to go meet every black person in the world whom they claim to know every thing about, than to stop hating and generalizing. Anybody can sit behind a computer and type ridiculous, rude, and hateful things so they hide behind the safety of their monitors.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm white. I work in a nursing home where almost everyone else that works there is black. They are rude to me every day even though when I first started working there I was nice to everyone. Racism sucks.
