Turn off the water heater. Should be a breaker in your electrical panel for this. After the heater is turned off. connect a garden hose to the drain valve and drain the water from the heater by opening the drain valve. This should stop the leaking.

OK. This just happened with my water heater. You'll probably need a new water heater, so check to see if you're still under warranty. To keep the water from leaking, try to siffen the water off of the heater using a garden hose. In my garage there's a water hose connected to the water heater, and it's draining into a bucket. You'll need to drain the heater. Then call a plumber. Good Luck!

Make sure you turn the water off to the water heater also. Not sure if when you said you "turned the knob off" you turned the water off or the GAS if it is a gas heater. After you have the hose hooked up and open the valve to drain it you can also open a hot water faucet somewhere in the house and open the "HOT" side of your water heater. This will help prevent a vacume when draining the tank.

If it is the water heater itself leaking you will have to turn off power or turn the gas control knob to pilot position. Drain the water heater. This is done by attaching a garden hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the Hot water heater. Place other end of hose outside then open drain valve. If there is hole in tank you will have to replace the entire hot water heater.

Attach your garden hose to the spout at the bottom that looks like a garden hose would connect to.... and drain the water out the window or into your washing machine, down the floor drain, or into your sink - whatever is a drain and is nearby!! That will direct the water from places it's not supposed to be! You'll be w/o hot water but that is a lot less expensive than replacing your walls - that'll run about $15,000. Be sure to turn off the breaker - no use burning out the elements since there will be no water in there.

Once you get the hose connected to the drain on the heater and open the valve, go into the kitchen and open the hot side of the faucet. Wouldn't hurt to open the hot side of the shower as well. This lets air into the lines to allow the water to drain faster. Same principle as holding your finger over the end of a straw that has water in it.

You need to shut off the water heater so it won't continue to heat water, but you need to shut off the water coming into the water heater. As water is used (or leaks) out of it, it continuously refills. On top of the water heater there will be two pipes coming out of it. One is marked "cold" or "in" and the other will be marked "hot" or "out". Somewhere on the "cold" or "in" pipe there should be a valve. This valve controls water coming into the water heater. Shut this valve....

Hook up a water hose to the drain line at the bottom of the tank and run the hose outside. This will drain the tank. It sounds as though your tank is leaking.

there are diffrent things to do at this point. bleed the water heater with the bleeder screew. and if does not stop leeking turn off the boilerand if that does no stop it there is a crack in it. that means you have to close it buy going to a hard ware store and getting a mig wilder its about 12 bucks burn the metel over the hole and that will stop it.

Until you get a new one, find the faucet on it and hook it up to a hose. Turn it on once you get the hose hooked up and drain the water out. Obviously you will want to drain the hose outdoors or perhaps in the tub.
