I started to try to push it and the wheels wouldn't turn, they would lock up. I picked it up off the ground and rotated one of the wheels forward and the other spins backward and vise versa. Please help...

This is because it has a differential. If the engine is connected to the wheels, but isn't running - then the motion is transferred to the other wheel, but in the other direction. Differentials split the power from the engine. If it is giving no power, then the total movement of the wheels must equal zero - the one turning forwards is balanced by the one turning backwards. As a result, it sounds like the diff and axles are fine, but something is seized between them and the engine.

Cars do the same thing if you jack up the drive wheels and try to turn one - while the car is in gear (stick shift), or in park (auto.).

There are pawls in the hub of the wheels that make them turn. One or both are stuck. Take them apart and clean/oil them or at least get some wd-40 in there to loosen them up. The direction of spin is due to a differential like in a car. That is so when you turn a corner one wheel won't spin and tear up the grass.
