I am figuring out if I want to be a retail merchandiser or a store manager. Are these the best way to learn about retail? Let me know.

Get experience in a retail environment.

But for just some facts: www.nrf.com/RetailCareers (National Retail Foundation) and retailindustry.about.com

i can say that the best way to learn about retail is to work in it part-time. I work in a ladies fashion store on Sundays only . I enjoy it for 5 hours ,but not for a 40 hour week as it is too boring for me and I can't stand on my feet for long hours.I discovered that being an Assistant Mgr on Sundays is ok. Retail is mostly waiting for the customer to come and buy something and the reat of the time ordering inventory and checking inventory and displaying the merchandise and sell, sell, sell,.\
Try to get a job where you are working evenings and sats and see if you like it. Store managers are responsible people and go to business meetings and do paperwork and handle any store problem there is.

get INVOLVED in the retail business! apply for retail jobs close to you -- make sure you EXPLAIN to the manager that you WANT TO LEARN because you want to excel in the merchandising area. i'm sure you could also get an internship at a company, depending on how old you are/what your credentials are! good luck!
