Personally speaking, I am a retail manager of a very well known retail giant. What do you mean "different"? Can you be more specific?

I know that some really big retail chains put job applicants through personality testing as part of the applicant screening process. These stores have spent a lot of time and money analyzing the personality traits associated with those retail workers that are deemed most successful. The pre-screening personality tests eliminate a whole lot of people that don't "fit" the successful personality profile....so...that's why you end up with a whole lot of Stepford retail associates in a lot of big retail stores. I'm not sure if this is the "different" that you refer to in your question but it sure answers why they all have that same goofy smile.

What you're seeing is the glazed look of boredom. Trust me, this is from personal experience.
