I'm amazed how - compared to the 60s and 70s, and even the 80s and 90s to some degree - uninspiring most of the acts on the major labels are these days. What would it take to get some of the electricity and excitement back into the music biz?

The industry is struggiling, just as the creators and musicians and those who generate the trends and rhythms of music, to bring about new music, new rhythms, new highs, no lows anymore. This is not an easy task, most of us these days do not feel the music as powerful as it used to be in the 60s, 70s and even 80s. I guess powerful music, trendy, strong, moving, emotional, involved does not happen all the time. There must be some years or even decades in which music undergoes changes, inaction, passive conditions, neutral a.k.a. boring times so that good times for music appear, are created and generated. This is just the beginning of the century and music is gathering, collecting the sounds and rhythms of the 20th Century decades, in order to become something new, true music of the ages.

Personally, I think some of the 60s music was diabolical. The Beatles, for instance. Can't stand them. I just think people were still coming out of a dark period after the war and didn't expect any better. They were just grateful for some light entertainment. Today's music is diverse and there is something for everyone. It's called choice and there's lots of it.
The 70s was a whole new era of music and had a big influence on me, as that was during my teens. I'll always look on those years fondly. The old disco era. Oxford bags. Afro perms. Those two tone shoes. Rose Royce.

Music today is not anywhere near what it used to be. Instead of majors looking for true talent, they are more concerned with marketing an image to sell to the masses. With so much exposure these days through the internet and cable television, people tend to search for bands in which there is an image that they can define themselves. The Buggles were right - video did kill the radio star.

Today, there are fewer labels. You have 4 labels controlling 75% of the market, which leads to few artists being promoted in favor of the 'project' of the month, season or year. The business is just that a business designed to make profit.
