An Ab-Ag complex consists of a protein secreted by B cells, called an immunoglobulin (commonly known as an antibody) and a very specific molecule or part of a molecule to which it binds, called an antigen. An antigen can be a bacterial cell wall protein, a viral envelope protein, or even ones own DNA (e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus). Ag-Ab complexes can activate the immune system in various ways, such as complement (a protein of innate immunity) activation, opsonization (coating) of antigens for enhanced phagocytosis (cell eating), etc. A good example of an Ag-Ab complex is seen in hemolytic disease of the newborn, in which an Rh negative mother produce anti-D antibodies that cross the placenta and bind fetal Rh positive red cells.
