well, i use a free firewall from filseclab.com that was recomended to me and it's been good to me. they have a product called gaudian angel (http://filseclab.com/eng/products/guardian.htm) and it'll filer what your kid can access.
if you really want to know what's actually going on, go to http://download.com and type "internet nanny" in the search field OR in the left column click "Security&Spyware" and then click "Monitoring Software".
They provide prices, free downloads, free trials, user and editor reviews... You'll find just what you need... oh, and these programs run undetected.
