I think that depends on what kind of thing you prefer.
Personally me and my friend much prefer Universal... but we mean Universal Islands of Adventure, we do go in the Studios bit as well, but Island of Adventure is the best for big rides.
To be hones I haven't been to Disney for quite a few years now, but the friend I usually go with did last year. He came back and said it was OK but still prefers Islands of Adventure.
For roller coaster rides, it really is the best park in the Orlando area. We've even driven down to Tampa to Busch Gardens, and that didn't compare, in our opinion.
Best tip - get there are early as you can in the morning, then do all the big roller coaster rides, that usually have the longest queues...... we have been know to do them 3 or 4 times in a row!! The Hulk ride, Duelling Dragons and also Superman tend to have the longest lines.
Don't miss out on the really great water ride - Popeye & Bluto's Bilge Rat Barge ride. It's fantastic, if you don't mind getting absolutely soaked. Again we've been known to stay on again and again - I think our record so far is 10 times in a row!!
Another tip - Take a towel and spare pair of shorts, that way you can get as wet as you like, but can change in the car so you aren't driving back in soggy clothing!!
We've also gone early, done all the big rides and then gone back to swim and sunbathe at the hotel, then gone back to the water rides - wearing swimming gear under our shorts!!
There's lot more to do than just the roller coaster stuff, but that's what we like most.
Spiderman isn't, but it's still a great ride!
Over in the Studios - which you can walk to from Islands there is a mixture of stuff to do. Suggest you buy a pass that allows you to hop between the two. The classic stuff like Jaws and Back to the Future are OK if you haven't done them before, but a bit boring after the first time.
The Men in Black ride is another that we love to do over and over again if possible. Bit daft really, but you travel round in a sort of car thing, but you have a laser type gun that you use to kill alien creatures......... extremely silly, but addictive. Especially when you try and get high scores for a better rating at the end of the ride.
The old King Kong ride has now been replaced, but I haven't been on it, so can't tell about it. I'm sure last time we went the ET ride was still up and running - a great classic that should be done at least once.
So I guess I'm saying that if you like the thrill rides, universal is definitely the one......
But if you prefer the parades and meeting characters and not so many big rides, maybe Disney would be better.
Take advantage of the passes now that allow you to be flexible, so you could have visits to Seaworld, Universal, Wet n Wild etc. Seaworld is a good place to spend the day, with a mix of rides, animal shows and also a change to sample Budweiser beer for free..............
Have to say that some our best Disney times were actually spent in their waterparks...... so if you do Disney, again get passes that allow you access to them as well.
It's certainly worth doing research on the official websites before you go. There is so much to do, it helps to have a plan on what you really want to do. Plus sometimes they are doing special offers on entrance tickets as well.
Also look at the exchange rate, it may be cheaper to buy them here before you go, so you're buying in sterling.
Hope this helps.
And it's certainly made me want to go again this year, just thinking about it!!!
We did 4 years in a row, but I missed out last time.....
Enjoy your trip.

This really doesn't come down to one park being better then another with the only qualifier of if there are kids involved or not. What truly is the decider is your own personal state of disbelief.
If you can walk around a place and actually "believe" what they experience and suspend your analytical self, then Disney may be a more enjoyable experience. If you are only interested in hopping from ride to ride hoping each one outdoes the last, then Islands of Adventure is the place.
Like some people have said, if you've outgrown Cinderela, then don't go to Disney, you will find it overly childish, and probably wish you would have saved the money. But if you can actually let yourself live in the fantasy, Disney will knock your socks off hands down. While Disney does have a few good rides, the Universal Islands of Adventure does pack them in a more concentrated area. But if you want to enjoy the shops and walking around the park just as much as the rides, then definately Disney.

Universal's Islands of Adventure is better than Disney. Disney is better than Universal Studios. This is particularly true if you are older. For little ones, Disney will always be better than any of Universal's offerings.

Vicki,
It really depends on what your looking for, this is a very broad question you asked. As for Disney has several different amusement parks to see. Disney has the Magic Kingdom, Disney/MGM Studios, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, and that's just the six in Florida. Universal has two in Florida, Islands of adventure, and Universal Studios/Florida. Disney in my opinion is so much better, and has so much more to see. But then I love all theme Parks.

Disney is way better than Universal. Disney puts tons of detail into their rides and they have more parks...

If you are taking kids like 2-8 Disney is better. If it's you and a bunch of freinds, Universal is better.
They do sell passes for both of them in a bulk pass that is a little cheaper.

it depends. disney world is more for little children and people who don't like SUPER extreme rides (with an exception of a few). universal studios/island of adventures has got some serious intense rides. it just depends on what you like better. i personally like both theme parks. i love Universal studios/island of adventures for the awesome rollercoasters but i also like disney world for their beautiful rides and intricate park designs. i say that both are awesome.

they are both fantastic, however disney is more family and child orientated. Univseral has a much more adult feel about it.
Universal is more spaced out so you dont feel as crammed in when you are there. the rides are also more intense especially if you go to islands of adventure. whereas a lot of the places in disney have a laid back feel to them.
I would not want to choose which one i could go to though, because they are all amazing, and you should never miss the opportunity to experience it.
