It's a possibility... it always is.. it's typically skips a generation and also runs in the mother's side... it also ONLY "runs in families" if they are FRATERNAL (not identical twins). Identical twins are "luck of the draw", fraternal are hereditary.

Paternal (Identical--from 1 egg that splits) twins:
The likelihood of a single fertilization resulting in identical twins appears to be a random event, not a hereditary trait, and is uniformly distributed in all populations around the world.

Fraternal (twins from 2 separate eggs) twins:
Studies show that there is a genetic basis for fraternal twinning. However, it is only the female partner that has any influence on the chances of having fraternal twins as the male cannot make her release more than one ovum.

My mom is a fraternal twin, and neither her nor her sister had twins, so the chances of that falling to me are pretty high. .So if it happens a lot in your family, you may have a shot, but there are no guarantees. Fertility drugs can also increase your chances if you are totally set on having multiples. Or, you can just be happy with whatever nature blesses you with.

yes there is a chance that you would have twins. I had twins and my mother was a twin. My father had twin uncles and I have a cousin on my fathers side that had twins right after I did. If the gene for hyperovulation was passed onto you from your mother or father then you have a chance. from http://multiples.about.com/od/pregnancy/a/familytwin.htm
However, only women ovulate. So the connection is only valid on the mother's side of the family. While men can carry the gene and pass it on to their daughters, a family history of twins doesn't make them any more likely to have twins themselves.

well I just had a set of fraternal twin girls who are 6 months now and my mother was a twin. The doctor told me that men don't carry the gene. Just the women do. I have heard people say it skips a generation but who knows. I think it is a wonderful experience. Good luck.

There is a pretty good chance of having twins. My father had twin brothers, and my sister had twin boys. Take care.

everyone has a 20% chance of having twins
women carry the gene so it has to run in "her" family
if you are the women and twins "run' inyour family your chances go up to 35%
if you have twins your chances of having twins again is 50%
they are said to skip a generation but that isn't always correct

If it is genetic(which it sounds like it is) then you have a 25 to 50% chance of having twins yourself!!!
