You should start by testing the market. Create your product/service and attempt to sell it to someone. Don't choose a friend or relative, as they are biased -- you need a real customer who will pay for the product/service.

If you are unable to find someone who will pay for the product/service, ask the person why they won't purchase. It will help you immensely with determining if the product is over-priced, or lacks certain features that are required.

Once you have performed a test, go to your local city hall and ask for a small business license. They will help you to determine if the product/service needs to be licensed or taxed.

Beyond that, you will need a name for your business. You will have to get a ficticious business license. The city hall may have a kit to help understand how to get a name that is not conflicting with someone else's trademark or business name.

You will need the business license to be able to get a checking account at a bank for your business.

After that, you should focus all of your energies on selling the product and building the business! (the less time spent on paperwork and overhead, the better!)

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Really Start Your Own Business, Fourth Edition by David E. Gumpert
* How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan: Step-by-Step Guide by David E. Gumpert
* What No One Ever Tells You about Starting Your Own Business: Real-Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs (What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business) by Jan Norman
* Business Start-Up Kit by Steven D. Strauss
* Start Your Own Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Rieva Lesonsky

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

1st step - Decide exactly what it is you're going to do.
2nd step - Do research, find out how others have / are doing it and see if you can benchmark (copy) their practices.
3rd step is basically do it.
