A call center is a place where a company funnels their calls to. Many companies are sending their call centers to India because of lower overhead costs. General Motors is commmitted to keeping their call centers in the USA as much as possible, so as not to upset their customers when they hear an accent on the other end of the line.
Check out the website below, it's for the company I work for. We may have job openings you'd be interested in.
Good Luck,

A Call Center is a place where call center agents take inbound, or make outbound customer service calls. Usually agents are placed on an automated calling queue, basically it's a computer that routes calls to whichever agent is not currently on a call.
This job is very constrictive in that agents need to stay on the phone to receive or make calls; usually your breaks and lunches are strictly monitored. In many call centers the agents are gaged on performance metrics such as average call length, time off queue, average calls per day, etc, etc). Also, many companies advertice these Call Center jobs as "Customer Service" positions when in fact the agent will be expected to meet some form of sales quota, which can be stressful.
Here is an excerpt from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics: "For customer service representatives working in call centers, there usually is very little time between telephone calls; as soon as representatives have finished with one call, they must move on to another. When working in call centers, customer service representatives are likely to be under close supervision. Telephone calls may be taped and reviewed by supervisors to ensure that company policies and procedures are being followed, or a supervisor may listen in on conversations."
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has an online 'Occupational Handbook' that describes most careers. I placed a link to the description for Customer Service Representative in the sources list below.

A call center is where people call into for customer service call for there credit cards, cable, utilities, etc.... bill collections. There job is to answer your questions and satisfy you needs or it could be a technical support center to help yoou with your computer problems. Are you thinking of working at a call center. Like to work on the phone and like people hovering over you all day they also have supervisors that walk around listening in and critiquing your phone ettiquette. I did it for a short time doing a poll during a presidential campaign I did not it many people hand up in your face. I guess it depends on if they are calling you or if your are calling them like in the case with the bill collectors. good luck.

Call centers can be a number of things - My company has a call center to receive trouble calls about equipment which needs service of some sort. Other call centers might be like the ones you call to order something you saw on TV. Still other might be like the ones taking donations for charities. Some call centers call out to take polls, or to promote political candidates, or to telemarket products.
