I don't get it. The game bores the hell out of me. To be fair, I'm not crazy about watching any sport. And I've never been to a match in person. But I would much rather watch football or hockey. Soccer looks cool in sneaker comercials, but the actual game is pretty damn slow and dull. This game has to have something if the whole world loves it! What am I missing?

The world loves football because the world plays football and understands football. It is a non-stop game that is tactical, technical, and physical and demands severe fitness and ability - much more so than football (with the hands) or baseball. Someone who has played the game appreciates the ball skills and defensive skills that players in the top leagues have. People who have played recognize tactics, strategies, the purpose behind substitutions, the mental aspect of the game, and so on.

When a non-player watches a match, he has no basis to understand the formation, attacking and defensive styles, and passing patterns. To such a person, it seems like quasi-random effort with a little flair here and there. He doesn't understand, so he becomes bored. Those who are fully ignorant go a step further and deride what they don't understand.

There is a reason it is called, "The beautiful game."

i LOVE soccer. so i think i can answer your question. in soccer if you love to run and always be moving, its the perfect sport for you. and the thrill of being on a break-away heading for the other teams goal is amazing. sometimes people just like some sports for no reason though. but this argument goes both ways. for example i hate softball/baseball. its the most BORING sport to watch and it takes forever just to play one game. other people reverse it, and love softball and hate soccer. there are lots of cool moves and tricks that you can learn in soccer, and it keeps you active and fit. i hope that helps you understand it a little more.

It depends on the people and what they like, we all have different tastes, I , for example, am indiferent towards watching sports, but I know people who would actually cry if their favorite team lost.
