Well my 95 Caprice Classic went 23 miles on empty and then turned around and came back about 11 miles and i still was running fine when i pulled in the gas station. So yea it all depends on how you drive and how many gallons is left in your tank im not sure about a Jetta but i wouldnt push it to far cuz its a pain to push and its a pain to replace the fuel pump to so just dont push it to far.

If you want to know the exact amount of miles you have left when the gas light comes on then theres a simple thing you can do to find out.

What you should do, is fill up a jug of gasoline, about 2 gallons or so and put it in your car. The next time your gas light comes on reset your trip meter. Then you can drive your car till it runs out of gas, still have gas to make it to a gas station, and know the exact distance you can go from when your gas light comes on.

A smart driver wouldn't try to go much further than the next Gas station. But normally when the needle hits E there is usually an engineered 1 to 2 gallon reserve(some are actually empty at E). 1 gal. will get you about 22 mi. and 2 approx. 40 (But I wouldn't chance it) Oh! look in your owners manual it will give you a close estimate

May be 15 miles.

but
It means go to the Gas station as soon as you can.
Considering the hurdles of running out of gas and pushing or calling for help, it is best to stop as soon as you can.

You can drive the number of miles it takes you to get to the nearest gas station, and that is all.

The owner's manual will tell you how much gas is left at that point. Probably about a gallon. So if you get, say, 25 MPG...

You will ruin your fuel pump. Costly repair, have to remove the fuel tank. Anytime you run fuel below a 1/4 tank, you are straining your fuel pump and one day your car will develop starting problems. It ain't worth it.
