A player's plus/minus can only go up or down if they are on the ice.

If they are on the ice when their team scores a goal: +1
If they are on the ice when the opponent scores a goal: -1

Note that this is only for even-strength or shorthanded goals. Powerplay goals do not affect plus/minus.

You receive a +1 if you were on the ice when your team scored a goal. You receive a -1 if you were on the ice when the other team scored. Plus/minus can increase or decrease significantly depending on how many goals were scored altogether during a game. This can be calculated for just one game, a few games or even the entire season.

Goalies do not receive plus/minus as they are (usually)on the ice most of the game.

you get a -1 by this:
Being on the ice when the opposing team scores
5 v 5
4 v 4
3 v 3
When you are on the power play (5 v 4, 5 v 3, 4 v 3)

In simple terms, if you are on the ice at even strength (e.g., 5v5, 4v4), and your team scores, you get a plus. If you are on the ice at even stength and your team is scored against, you receive a minus.

You can also receive a minus if you are on the ice for a power-play and your team gives up a shorthanded goal; However, no plus is awarded for being on the ice if your team scores on the powerplay.

During the games they keep track of who is on the ice when a goal is scored. So, you get a plus point when you're on the ice when a goal is scored by your team. You get a minus point when you're on the ice when the other team scores a goal.

If you're on the ice when your team scores a goal, that's a +1. If you're on the ice when the other team scores, that's a -1. At the end of the season, add up the pluses and minuses, and that's your +/-

When you are at even strength if your team gets scored on it is a minus 1 and if your team scores it is a plus one. Goalies don't have plus/minus numbers they just have goal against average and save percentage.
