DON'T go to Best Buy ... it will be your worst buy ever, LOL!
Look up their business practices before you do so .. sorry, just had to put that in due to previous answer/

Other than avoiding emachines and compaq, and doing research on various brands, the more important thing than brand is specs.

DO NOT get a Sempron or Celeron processor.
For multi-tasking, a dual core processor is best.
Get at least 1 GB ram. If you are doing memory intensive tasks like graphics, video editing, gaming, get 2GB ram.
Most laptops come with 80-120GB hard drive, which should be sufficient, you can always get an external hard drive later,
Most laptops have all the other necessities .. wireless, bluetooth, DVD/CD burner, memory card reader, etc., but you will want to make sure before you buy.
Check the keyboard to see how it fits your hands.
While larger monitors are nice, they make a laptop less portable, so you may want to limit size to 15.4".

Look at acer computers because they are god value for money, and they have good hardware in them. Do not get Dell, HP or Compaq because i work in IT and most of the laptops that i see with major hardware problems come from those three brands. IBM computers are not as good as they used tp be because they are not made by IBM any more so they are over priced and over rated. Toshiba laptops are good but they are more expenceve than acer. I use acer laptops, and supply all of my clients with them and i have not had any problems with them yet. Jsut look for a duel core processor, 1gb ram and around an 80 gb or larger hard drive and it will do evereything that you want it to do.

Unles you are currently using a mac do not get one because you will have to get a whole new set of software with it so it becomes a verry expencive change, and you will have to re learn how to use them and there is not as much software around for a mac than a pc so if you are a gamer the mac will not support your games. You will be doing a whole lot more chasing ans searching to get software for a mac than a pc

Definitely go with a Macbook using your student discount. You will find many college students use Macs and it will do everything you want simply and reliably. If reliability is what you want, don't go with a Windows PC because all new PCs will have Vista, which is still very buggy and unreliable, not to mention the viruses and spyware.

enable me preface with the help of pointing out that i'm an approved Dell and HP Reseller. I certainly have no longer something against Macs in any respect. actually, i'm tremendously inspired with the help of the present Macbooks. in case you % the Microsoft working gadget, the Dell Vostro workstation has been my present day %. for ideal value for lowend laptops. in my opinion, you're evaluating apples to oranges. they do no longer discover ways to one yet another as they the two have different reward. My professional opinion: Macbooks - good (outfitted on Unix platform), sturdy classes, user-friendly, extra inflexible standards, extra ideal video enhancing capacity, ability to run XP purely approximately (applying application). Dell Vostro - Comes with XP or Vista, versatile with application, lots of hardware concepts, inexpensive. i % to propose you communicate on your instructors first and ask what they are going to be applying. finally, you will locate much less issues in case you whichever platform they're applying.

When I used to work in NC as a Tech, we used all types. I found the best laptop handsdown is the IBM Thinkpads. I used one to go place to place to set up networks in residential and commercial sites. If you want a good deal go to Loveno.com or to my distributer: thesoftwarechoice.com. Computers are all a matter of what they throw together, and in my experience IBM is my first choice. It's more of a serious, no-glamour computer.

i would suggest a macbook thirteen inch, because it is good for school, small, lighweight, and has lots of cool features. You can also get a discount sometimes as a studen. Check them out http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=BC8C6084&nclm=MacBook
