Your battery might be so dead that the poor Alternator is having trouble getting a descent charge to it. I personally think it's to loose.

Does it squeal more when you turn on blower, lights, wipers etc.? You didn't get the alternator belt tight enough.

Hands won't do it, you need some sort of lever, I use a breaker bar. And you need to tighten the bolt while leaning on the lever.

There is a correct tightness setting, documented in your service manual. And gadgets for measuring belt deflection, though a thumb can do as well. There is such a thing as "too tight", so be careful.

Well, one, if you were able to put a belt on by hand, that more and likely means the tensioner is stuck. Giving you too much slack for the belt. Sqealing belt, means its loose. Also, give some info of what car you have. May also need a new belt.

You can tighten it by hand, but you need to measure the belt deflection - this measures how tight it actually is. Also, the squealing can be caused by the tensioner (if your model has one) bearing going bad - a common problem when fitting a new (therefore stiffer) belt. Be careful going too tight - it can ruin the bearings in the alternator, tensioner, power steering pump...anything that belt operates.

Wolf has it exactly The belt most likely is too loose. Hand strength is NOT enough to get enough tension. Might even be a two-man job to hold the alternator and get the bolt tightened.

Belts are tight when they have 1/2 inch of play. Sounds like your belt is still needs to be tightened. Your belt is still slipping.

you could try some belt dressing on it,but it sounds like its glazed, and the only way to fix that is with a new 1.

YOU PUT IT ON WITH YOUR HANDS ???????????
NOWHERE NEAR TIGHT ENOUGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU HAVE TO USE A PRYBAR TO PUT TENSION IN THE BELT
