Why are the events at Gallipoli so important to Australians?

World War I was the first war where individual Australian and New Zealander units were fighting together as a significant portion of the British Commonwealth's troops, and Gallipoli was the first campaign where they were a significant part of the offensive.

In addition, it was the first truly hard battle for the ANZACs with the commonwealth, and many ANZAC commanders and units distinguished themselves on the battlefield.
