It varies by the person who plays it. Usually, once you get the basics down, there's nothing you can't do with that thing. If you're just getting one to be cool, it will take you a long time. If you want to play it, it will take you shorter time. Start out with chords, and then scales. Find out more about musical theory. Also, don't be afraid to learn new genres through guitar. I've gotten more and more into music after I bought my guitar.

First, and most obvious, buy a guitar. I don't know what you heard but it doesn't matter what direction you go in acoustic or electric. I don't know about acoustic but you should be able to get a good electric set up for about $250-300. Then go to a music store in your area and ask about the teachers they have. Also if your school offers music theory classes I strongly recommend you take them it's a BIG help. It'll probably be about a year or so before you get really good and can really play. I love playing the guitar and you should really pursue it if you enjoy music. Hope this helps.

I've never taken a single lesson, and, frankly, I surprise myself sometimes with some of the stuff I'm able to play. You can learn the basics without paying for lessons, chords and proper finger placements and all of that. I say just get a guitar, learn to read tabs and go for it. Practice until your fingers bleed, and then practice some more.

it will take time! it took me a year to get used to playing simple songs! I taught myself to play! it all depends on how fast you are at learning stuff and how long each day you practice! P.S. don't buy a real pricey guitar, get one that cost around 100 to 200 dollars is good for beginners like a epiphone starter pack guitar with amp, it cost about 150 dollars! just don't give up easy when you mess up playing!

Learn songs you like...it will motivate you to practice. Use tabulature, it is easier than reading notation, although that is good too. Start out slow, so your hands get used to the technique, you will get faster with practice. Set aside 2 hours a day for it. And of course, find someone who will help you. All you really need is to learn how to learn!

It depends on how hard and well you work...my boyfriend never took a lesson, but he's been playing for about 4 years now and he's amazing at it...then there are people who've been playing for awhile but aren't that great, because they don't work very hard or just don't care about it enough

No matter how much your fingers hurt, keep practicing. Endure the pain and before you know it you won't be able to feel anything with your fingers. It's pretty cool for a little while.

that depends on your music ability. If your a natural, you'll pick it right up, if not, you have to work harder. But that makes it so much better when you do pick it up.
