The previous home owners had all the celing fans installed with remote controls. The fans do not work manually, only with the remotes. One of the remotes stopped working a couple of days ago. The battery is new but there is no signal to the fan.

My question is...
Is there any way to override the remote to use the pull cords manually? If not, is there any way to reset the remote? If you have had this problem, what was the solution? Thanks

There is a remote control sensor installed at the very top of the fan. You can replace it or remove it. New remote units can be purchased separately at Home Depot.

It slips into the bracket attached to the ceiling box and can be accessed by dropping the escutcheon (funnel shaped top plate, probably 3 screws), remove the the sensor (slipped above the bracket about 1 1/2" X 3" in size with wires coming out of each end), disconnect the wires and reconnect the box wires to the fan/light wires to remove or wire in a new one matching the wires to the new from the old.

Make sure the breaker is turned off before you try anything. Do not undo any wires that are connected originating in the box, only the wires that feed the fixture. White to white, black to black/blue and/or red to remove and exactly as exists for replacement. It's not difficult to do but hard to access with the fan blades in place. BE SAFE! Make sure the power is off and don't fall off the ladder.

Good Luck!

You can remove the remote control unit from the fan. You will need to remove the ring at the top of the fan or may have to take down fan to get at wiring and when you do this you will see a control unit wired to the fan from the house wiring unwire the unit and remove . You will have eithier 2 or 3 wires in the box and the ground , if you have 2 wires take the black from box and splice with the 2 blacks from the fan and white to white if you have 3 wires take one hot wire (usually black and red) and put to one hot wiresof fan and the other hot from box to other hot of fan and white to white and you will be able to now use the pull chains. Make sure power is off before doing all this. You can e-mail me with any questions

Goto Homedepot and pick up another remote. Then all you have to do is make sure the little switches in the remote and in the fan are set to the same setting.

yes but you must be a super tinker to do it. to pay to have done i would charge more than a new replacement. why? taknig it apart. drilling holes for new switches and rewiring and reassembling and still a risk the whole motro or transformer is shot. 50 years ago it would go to a repair man and he would make a reasonable charge. not like that today. do it yourself or toss it. and if you know nothing about wiring etc. you could kill yourself or start a fire.
