My life in my present community has grown stagnant. My job is dependent on grants, and is day to day, with little stability. My dream is to move to a large city. How does one do this with few resources?

By planning and preparing ahead of time. Research your chosen city(ies) on line - housing, cost of living, job market. If you have any contacts there (school alums, former coworkers, etc.) use them. Maybe they have a spare room you can use for a while.

Check job availability in your chosen field as well, through trade journals/associations or contacts. Start putting out feelers, sending resumes, whatever might be appropriate.

Put any extras in storage for a while and rent a small apartment or studio until you know where you really want to put down new roots.

Last but not least, peanut butter has lots of protein and between that and $0.29 ramen noodles, you can get by for a long time....trust me, I know..... ;)

Start cutting your expenses back now, save every penny you can. Do a little online research to find out how much it is going to cost you to rent a place there. Then when you have enough to pay a security deposit and one or two months rent, go for it. You may have to be willing to take any job that is available at first, but you can also do some job searching online while you are saving. My wife and I moved to another city with her first paycheck a month away, I didn't have anything lined up yet, and after the first month's rent, we had $200 to last a month. It can be done.
