Try my life for a month and then say I should be grateful.
You might have a really great life,it doesn't mean we all do.

Because we as human beings are always pushing ourselves, to get more (social standards). Sometimes out of greed, other times out of self gratification. I supposed some people are just never satisfied.
We should appreciated the things that we have (Particularly in Weston civilisation) no matter how big or small, because others suffer a lot worse.

You could be if you though about it for five minutes every day.
...of course we only need to be grateful for those things in our lives which we appreciate...not the things we wish weren't there.

The nature of man, When in the state of existing only for himself, rely on himself, love himself,, this leads to greed, to wanting more for himself, and even if he has everything he desires he is never satisfied and well always want more.
For one who has realised his true existence and sees that his existence is lacking in real existence,he sees that he is weak and impotent and that he is completely dependent and in need. He sees that what he has is not from him, he is happy with little and does not complain, he shows gratitude for the smallest and simplest of things.

Answer: It's matter of 'relativity.'
Take away things you use, and see how you get on doing what you want / like or need to do. Then you might experience that sense of 'Gratitude' for what's missing.
......or you might just be grateful for being ...'without.'

basically cuz of that Joni Mitchell song -line- Don't know whatcha got til it's gone.
We don't always realize how much something is needed, wanted, missed, loved by us until it's taken from us. We can be selfish, greedy, cocky *barstards*, and some of us have to learn lessons/make mistakes before we comprehend that.
Some never do.

I think we are. There are so many reminders in the world that things could be so much worst. One just has to thank God.
