They are most importantly losing the value of doing their own work, working towards a goal, failing and then at the end achieving it. Not many achieve things the first go, as someone once said, 99% of success is failure. These kids are going to come out of school looking for all the easy answers.

Amen! Say that again. . . .and again.

I try not to answer homework questions--except ones where I canhelp the asker learn how to do some thing, not do it for them.

I don't fault the kids--they're just trying to get their work done--and don't realize theat they are hurting themselves in the long run. You are also right about sources (and I do have the credentials in my field)--Y/A is fine for finding sources by asking--not AS a source.

But I do fault parents--and even more teachers--for not teaching these kids HOW to learn, HOW to do research. The tragedy is that that is the real failure, not whether the kid knows how far it is from the Earth to the moon.

BTW--I'm not just venting (ok, I am venting). But teaching college, I see bright kids day in and day out that are NOT prepared--and when I talk to them, it is obvious that most of the problem is they've never been taught what they need to know in primary/secondary school.

I wouldn't ask for help for the whole assignment, just a problem that I might not understand. People on here offer valuable insight that usually help me comprehend difficult concepts better. Don't be jealous that you didn't have the internet when you were young. We are just resourceful in this way.

^To the person above me:

It's not like we're writing a 15 page thesis paper. We don't need to cite sources! Most kids know what's credible and what's not anyway. And of course we don't research properly, that would take forever! Like I said before, it's NOT a research paper, it's probably a hard problem from last night's math that you can't figure out. It's not that big of a deal.

Am I venting now? ;)

Kids are getting smarter as the generations go on. They will also become more lethargic. I'm a kid, but I don't want anyone to answer my questions. I just want them to guide me into the right direction. I don't think kids with an IQ of lower than 110 will find these types of resources on the web. Even if they do, it's going to be their problem in the future when they fail.
So if you see a child struggling for answers from this site, simply guide them into the right direction.

It would be amusing to see what happens when someone tries to turn in homework with some of the answers offered here. Especially those answers that are obviously by an adult with a sense of humor.

If the kids can't even spell right or construct a clear sentence, I see no incentive to help them. Some of these questions are just so obviously homework.

some kids (like me) don't have the social network (hello, i'm here aren't i) nor do my parents/siblings have any way of helping me. you don't have to help us, and i usually do all of mine on my own. every now and then i need a little outside help. i do appreciate everyone's help with that. at least i'm doing my homework. and noone said you had to answer any questions. just skip over it if you think that person is asking for homework help.

So, what is your point? Getting the answer? Does it matter how you get answers? If kids are resourceful enough to find the answers wherever then they deserve to get top marks. The answers people give are of course not always right, so the kids really do need to understand something so that they don't get sucker-punched. They get the answers, and seeing the answers probably helps them understand, anyway, don't be sch a sourpuss, doctor nobody.

Lol, I can see your point although if I were still in school and needed to actually do something - it'd be tempting to see if I could get it quickly here, especially something like math.

Hey, they're kids. You were a kid once. Wouldn't you have loved to have had Yahoo to talk to?

They're moms and dads are at work, and they often don't have anyone else to ask. Be gentle and help them if you know something.

Most of them are probably lazy morons who won't progress in life, society and the world beyond.
Sounds like Americans.
