I wonder if religion plays a large part in it (since here in America, religion is dominant). When I was a Christian, I was told my sexual desires were bad and needed to be supressed. I have left the religion and am heading towards paganism. I believe now that my body's urge to reproduce is just nature's way of keeping the human species going and I don't see it as a bad thing anymore. I don't act on my need for sex, but I now don't feel guilty about it any more.

Now, if it gets out of control, like needing porn and stuff like that, then it's bad, but if it's not out of control, I don't see the problem. So I think that the religion that is so strongly imprinted into our society is a major factor for this (look at Victorian Britain; they were really really prudish).

Societies of all kinds repress/suppress not only our sexual desires but many other of our basic "urges" as well. This is all an integral part of being "civilized."

Society does this so that we don't act like barbarians all the time (just some of the time). We are discouraged by society from killing, stealing, raping, pillaging, and other sorts of primitive and aggressive behavior. Sure, these kinds of things still go on all the time, but to a much lesser degree because of the constraints that society imposes upon us.

Our interactions with other people are "safer" and more predictable because of the limitations imposed upon us by society.

Society represses sex??? Are you joking??!!! Go to a movie, watch TV, surf the net... society is NOT repressing sex. If anything, our society is obsessed with sex. There may be small segments of society where sexual desire is repressed for religious or ethnic reasons. Society as a whole does not repress sexual desire.

I think in a lot of ways, society encourages and enhances our sexual desire. We repress our own sexual nature by what we believe.

Oh wait, I guess societal standards insist on consentual sex, so that could be a bit repressive, but role playing seems to help some people.

Live well~

Because repressing them actually heightens the thrill when we finally get to act on that desire. The anticipation makes it better - and the feeling of doing something illicit can also increase the pleasure.
