For a thunderstorm you need cold moist air over warm ground. The air near the ground warms up and rises. As it rises, moisture condenses out of it, releasing heat and causing it to keep rising. So thunderstorms are much more common in warm places like Australia than cold places. But the air in the centre of Australia is usually dry, so most thunderstorms in Aussie occur in the tropical north during the rainy season.
